clutch master cylinder size?

Putting a new clutch pedal in a new car and have a ?? on what size master cylinder to use? My old car has a Tilton 1 inch cylinder and I have had alot of trouble getting enough travel on the pedal. Would going to a 7/8" or 3/4" help get more travel? What do these different sizes do anyway? The clutch is a Tilton 3 disc and I use a pull type slave cylinder. Thanks
